The Balmorhea State Historic Site is a state park near Balmorhea, Texas, operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park features a collection of buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Old West town of Balmorhea.
Balmorhea was settled by the French in 1768, and became a trading center and fortress. In 1839, the Texas Rangers robbed a Mexican-owned fort, and the fort's proprietors, the Goliad Confederates, killed the Rangers' leader and occupied the fort. After the Texas Revolution, the Rangers retook the fort, killing many of the Confederates, and in 1848 the Mexican army retook the fort.
Settlement began in 1851. The site was officially established as a state park in 1951.
Balmorhea has been designated as one of America's most endangered historic sites, along with Route 66. Balmorhea is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
